And Catholic, GOP-appointed Judge Richard Kramer is one of Cupid’s helpers, having ruled today that gay and lesbian Californians have a constitutional right to marry. Each other, I mean.
Excellent, wonderful, happy news only slightly moderated by the inane blatherings of the predictable right. From the AP story linked above:
“‘For a single judge to rule there is no conceivable purpose for preserving marriage as one man and one woman is mind-boggling,’” said Liberty Counsel President Mathew Staver.”
The married heterosexual responsible for this blog — after consultation with his spouse — would like to inform Mathew Staver that this marriage does not need his help. In fact, the married heterosexual responsible for this blog would urge Mathew Staver to drop dead if it weren’t for the fact that such an unpleasant sentiment would mar the lovely, uplifting and life-affirming news of the day. So I’ll wait until tomorrow to suggest Staver drop dead, and until then will limit myself to telling him this:
You are wrong, and you will lose.
Sensible ruling such as this almost make me want to move back to California. This is a statement native Oregonians are trained from birth to never say.
And from what I understand, Washington State has a ruling coming up that could block the state law against it here as well.
In related news, rural Eastern Washington state Senators want to secede and form their own state (I wish I were kidding)
We can hope that WA courts do the wise thing in this case.
As a native of eastern OR I have a proposal for those seccessionists. They can seceed, but the have to join Idaho and take eastern OR with them. Then they can have their cultural oasis and both OR and WA will become beacons of civility. I hate saying these things about my homeland, but things have gotten a but nuts out here in the land of sage and wheat with moderate Dems (Barbieri) losing to talentless hacks just because they have and R after their name.
