Putting the “fun” back in “questionably useful added functionality”

By on 2007 01 26 at 5:50:00 pm

While wiping Zeke’s nose the past few days, I’ve been futzing with the blog software, and there are now two (2!) additional reasons you might want to register here as a member.

1) Members can now email individual posts to friends. I am not asking you to do so, mind you: no one needs more email. But if you were going to do so anyway, this little bit of functionality will make it easier. And needless to say, anyone using this function to spam or otherwise annoy people will be repeatedly TASERed.

2) Members can now save individual posts to a “favorites” list, so that you don’t have to sift through the obscure and strange and off-topic titles I put on posts here to find the thing you remembered liking. Eventually, if and when enough of you mark favorite posts, and if and when I figure out how, we should be able to do obnoxious “people who liked this post also liked these other posts linked here” and “most-popular posts” kinds of things. Also, I’m having a little trouble getting the remove from favorites functionality to work, but I think it’ll be at least a couple weeks before that becomes a real issue. In the meantime, let me know if you have problems with the new functions.

I hate to suggest additional work, but one feature that might be kind of useful would be to have the RSS feed indicate when a post is continued “below the fold.”

I’ll see what I can do about that, Dave. Makes sense.

Funny you should make this post, Chris. I was just looking at the “register” feature today wondering what it was for.

Tech question: what’s the diff between an “RSS feed” that Dave mentions, vs. the button that says,“Read Full Entry”?

For the irregular reader who likes to get through new posts quickly, a link to previous and next posts at the top of the page is very handy;  not all of us get time to read to the end of the comments.

Thank-you for the opportunity to make a suggestion and have a nice day.

Dearest OG McCrouton, an RSS feed is a different format for this blog, which you can read in an aggregator instead of coming here to the site. And I have so far failed to provide clues in the formatting of said document that are the equivalent of the button you mention.

Also, aggregators are very dangerous, and have been ever since they evolved back in the Cretaceous.

As an interim measure, I added the below-the-fold text to the feed.

No I didn’t, as it turns out. Hmm.

Welcome aboard, Oaktown Girl! Abandon all hope ye who etc.

With regard to the avatar: we’re using Gravatar, and while the Gravatar servers are being martinized (or something) they’re not accepting any new avatars. But that should end sometime this coming month. You can check in at http://www.gravatar.com.
