Steve’s dream

Long-term readers of this blog may remember my friend Steve Gyetko, who offered a finely-honed-if-slightly-gibbering-toward-the-end rant on politics a few months back.

Steve’s sent another letter, which I reproduce here. With any luck, it won’t be the last. Think of it as a little bicoastal slice of life.

Hey there,

I don’t know if it’s the humidity, or what, maybe I should stay away from the pickled garlic stuffed Jalapeños before bed, but I’ve been having the weirdest dreams lately.  Mostly I wake up laughing.  I suppose it could be worse, anyway, here’s the latest: I’m in the NYC subway, Times Square Station, waiting for the Number One Train. I look around and notice the platform and subway trains are filled with owls and penguins. Nothing but great horned owls and those little Adelie Penguins.  The regard me as in intruder, they don’t attack me but are plainly not pleased with the fact that I’m down there with them. The flap and squawk at me to show their displeasure.  I flee the station and grab the first person I meet and tell him about what I’ve seen.  He grabs me by my shirt front, shakes me, and says, like he’s talking to the village idiot, “Nobody goes down there anymore!”

Readers are invited to attempt to outshine this exemplary vision by posting their own bizarre nocturnal experiences in comments.
