Crab spiders come in white, yellow, pink, and green, but they don’t seem to have figured out how to make blue yet. (Until I tried to imagine a blue spider, I didn’t realize just how odd it would seem…) Nonetheless, not matching the flower they’re lurking on doesn’t seem to decrease their predation success much. Anyway, I suspect white on blue may be reasonably cryptic, depending on insect vision—a good match in ultraviolet?
Yeah, still not quite right but better. I stretched out the white levels to recover some of the detail in the spider, then boosted the blacks just a bit.
Yah, yah—pretty! But is that spider mooning us or menacing us? Either way I read him as a metaphor for Left Blogistan—dangerously uncivil! This exercise in Stalinist aesthetics brought to you by a Wingnut Parody Bot.
Thanks for teaching me about another plant. Do you think it would grow in Texas?
On the problem of matching the blue color to the true color, have you experimented around with white balancing (sheet of white paper in the picture for comparison)? Neato spider shot!
I just spent a week in SF with my family, and my sister’s garden has Ceanothus that blue. Now I"m back in muddy Minnesota, longing for the first buds of spring, still a few weeks away.
Stunning!!

blue looks almost right here!

spyder, there’s another angle we’ve been missing: the Karate Kid angle!
