Out of its element
A kingfisher landed on the neighbor's roof this morning, half a mile from the nearest fishable water. It scolded me through the open window for a moment, then left.
The lawn is in: the dog is happy. Now all that remains to be done is diverting several major Pacific Slope rivers to keep it sufficiently moist. I look at the broad green sod, and imagine it five years from now... as I rip it out to put in sand paths, benches and exuberant, droughty perennials.
The things one does for love of a dog.
