Fatherland and Son

Scene: Bangor International Airport, brightly lit and sparsely furnished back room. Seated, in shackles, is retired pop star Yusuf Islam.

Enter John Ashcroft, singing.

Ashcroft: It's not time to catch a plane,
Just sit down, take it easy.
You've been named, that's your fault,
There's some things we'd like to know.
Find a cell, settle down,
Once a month you can shower.
Look at me, I am old and in power.

I am not like you are now, and I know that it's not easy,
To be calm since we've found what you're up to.
But take your time, think a lot,
Why, just spill all the beans you've got.
For you will still be here tomorrow, but your rights may not.

Yusuf Islam: Why should I try to explain?
When I do you just invade again.
It's always been the same, same Old Glory.
Oh Miami's lights are bright, out in Gitmo they glisten.
Now there's a way and I know that I have to go away.
I know I have to go.

(singing together)

Ashcroft: It's not time to catch a plane,
Yusuf Islam: Go away
Ashcroft: Just sit down, take it easy.
Yusuf Islam: Go away, away
Ashcroft: You've been named,
Yusuf Islam: Why
Ashcroft: that's your fault,
Yusuf Islam: must
Ashcroft: There's some things we'd like to know.
Yusuf Islam: I go through this Inquisition
Ashcroft: Find a cell, settle down,
Yusuf Islam: alone?
Ashcroft: Once a month you can shower. Look at me,
Yusuf Islam: No.
Ashcroft: I am old and in power.

Yusuf Islam: Next time I'm taking the train.
Ashcroft: Come on the police train.

The police train!

Love it. Despite having other pressing projects I'm going to sit down at the piano and write some music for this on Saturday.

Ow. My head is hurting from song rebound! (But it's a good sort of pain. *grin*)

On a related note, when I saw Ashcroft singing his ridiculous song "Let The Eagle Soar" in F9/11 I was surprised at what a lovely voice he has (that's my professional opinion as a voice teacher; my friend Angela, who was also a voice major in college and who was sitting next to me in the theatre had the same opinion). So I guess the man has one redeeming quality. Given the fact that both he and Cat Stevens can actually sing, this musical exchange you've imagined would be worth seeing for real.

You did NOT write this. You did NOT.

Great to see you in such good form, Chris!
