Well, crap.
I must be out of the loop, somehow, having missed the news that Ellen Meloy, one of my favorite writers, died in her sleep a week ago.
From the obit linked above, written by Verlyn Klinkenborg:
"A great deal of nature writing," she wrote, "sounds like a cross between a chloroform stupor and a high Mass."
Those of you who haven't should go read her book Raven's Exile right now. I'd lend you mine, but I just handed it to the Journal's newest intern, Katie Renz, whom I'm secretly grooming to become Ellen's replacement - not that anyone could.

Chris,
I just discovered Creek Running North, very interesting perspectives, written with humour and warmth. It's been very inspiring to read your articles over these last few days. Do you have a written biography somewhere on the net, so I can find out more about what formed the man that has created these very warming and delightful articles?
Hmm, interesting idea. Here.
(and, oh, um, thanks.)

I'm sorry to hear about her death -- now I'm going to have to track down a copy of that book.
