Beautiful downtown Cima, California

Saturday, July 30 2005. We'd just watched thunderstorms pass us by for an hour or two on either side of our campsite. When they passed, we saw a new fire on the upper peaks of the Kingston range, about thirty miles distant, we guessed with no map.

When we smelled smoke, we hopped into the truck and went looking for the closer fire. The wind was from the south, so we headed for Cima, six miles down the road in that direction.

We found no fire. The light had shifted, and the weathered boards of the near-abandoned railroad siding town fairly glowed. Beyond the south shoulder of Kessler Peak, lowering clouds gathered over Nipton.
