Creek Running North

If you want something done right, don't let the Bush administration dither over it for a week first. Possibly frightened at reports of Big Scary Armed Negroes, the Army Corps of Engineers made little attempt to fix the NOLA floodwalls. A private contractor finally leapt into the um, breach, walling off the canal at its source in a startlingly short time. From the Washington Post, via Digby:
"For three days, Corps officials had lamented the difficulty of gaining access to the canal, but yesterday a local contractor, Boh Bros. Construction Co., apparently drove to the mouth of the canal and started placing a set of steel sheet pilings to isolate the canal from the lake. This job was finished yesterday afternoon."

I just posted this to the Majority Report's blog (Sam Seder and Janene Garafolo's show) during a commercial break, when they came back on they reported it. Word of mouth stuff works I guess.Posted by: craig at September 2, 2005 05:38 PM
Canada has put numerous relief teams on stand-by, ready to help, and then we actually heard GWB say, “we can take care of our own”. That was this morning at approx. 10 a.m.
Now, whether this was a pointed remark to us or any country which has not joined his war efforts, or has been ‘dumping’ cheap softwood lumber into the States, is up for debate, but really, he should just accept the potable water, food and medical supplies, and extra manpower.
British Columbia’s Heavy Urban Search and Rescue Team, the only Canadian rescue aid team currently involved, arrived in Lafayette after being called in by state officials, only to find it too dangerous for rescue operations.
Bush is an idiot. Gosh, he’s really giving Canada a good spanking now.

Bravo for the contractors. I hope they were actually under contract so somebody will pay them.
Now, if only they will let the Red Cross into New Orleans. Yes, they have been keeping them out! Something about worrying about it interfering with the non-existent evacuation order.
