Here's somebody who deserves a medal

I just hope he doesn't get arrested instead.

Rest assured if he gets arrested, this blog will be collecting bail money.

Bail money plus a defense fund.

I would contribute to the kid's defense fund, but agree one won't be needed. I don't get Pandagon's claim that anyone called the kid a looter. Everyone I have heard from right and left had nothing but praise for him.

The article Amanda quoted noted that he may get in trouble for taking the bus. It seemed quite obvious to me that Amanda was simply so incensed that the "people are looting!" story had been so all over the news that anyone would feel the need to add that to an article. Amanda and others pretty much clarified that it the comments.

I would also chalk it up to the media's need to add controversy and sensationalize everything, but did this story really need anything extra? Would bringing up the possibility of criminal charges been as likely to occur to the reporter if so many people who had simply been taking what they needed to survive had not been labeled looters? Would the survivors in question have had as a hard of a time getting into the Astrodome once they arrived if the news had concentrated more on the conditions in NO and less on the looters during the first few days? I don't think so, but it's not something you can really test.

It was the way the article Amanda quoted was phrased that pissed me off. Phrases like "an extreme act of looting," "actually stole a bus," and "renegade passengers," really let the reporter's opinion of someone who would take it on themselves to get themselves and others out of a bad situation, using what they had to hand, shine through.

Thankfully, it appears that the reporter's is a minority opinion, and at this point Gibson seems to be getting the hero's welcome that he deserves.
