Olduvai George

Tuesday is my friend Carl Dennis Buell's 59th birthday. So how come he's giving us a present?

Carl has been illustrating and illuminating the natural world for some decades: I think I first saw his work twenty years ago. He has an astonishing eye for detail, and I've been privileged to be able to put some of his artwork on CRN in the past, including an image I'll treasure for the rest of my life. Carl has illustrated a few more reputable, if piratical blogs as well.

And now, Carl has his own blog to illustrate. And all I can say is, it's about damn time.

However, he must still be working a few bugs out, because I don't see any paintings of Tito the Wonder Dog Mighty Hunter posted yet. [Sorry, Hank!] Despite this clear oversight, go on over and wish Carl a happy birthday.

Ahem. Tito's official real name is "Tito the Mighty Hunter." Just FYI. :D Gotta be millions of Wonder Dogs out there, but very few Mighty Hunters.

A longer accolade, spoken by more than one person who's known him, is "The best dog I ever even met."

Chris, glad you're not shutting down. I was going to write you this long, soulful e-mail about how you should do what feels right, but you should never imagine that you wouldn't be missed. But ... um ... I didn't. Yet.

hey chris,

thanks for the heads up about olduvai george and also for featuring his work earlier.

I sure like what you do here, and await new chapters of harquahala.

it's true the world is too much with us some days. it's those other days that provide perspective I think.

Hey, Chris, thanks so much for this link! If you hadn't mentioned it, I probably would have missed it altogether.

I do so love that great picture of Carl and his little friend sharing a beer. Carl is a talented guy, obviously, but it's that gentle, geeky wit that I love best in the work of his that I've seen. Even his title graphic -- wonderful!

Anyway, thanks.

Finally! I'm psyched. Thanks for posting the news, as I wouldn't have known it was up and running otherwise.
