Blog Against Racism Day

[Update: the first draft of the list of Blog Against Racism Day participants is here.]

"The soul, equal and eternal, emanates from bodies of different shapes and colors. Whoever foments and spreads antagonism and hate between the races, sins against humanity." - Jose Mart.

Welcome to Blog Against Racism Day! Here's what it's about. If you're participating, feel free to trackback to this post, or leave a comment here with the URL of your post(s). I'll do my best to compile a big list of posts later December 1 to help drive some traffic to your site.

(If you leave a comment with an URL, don't fret if it goes into moderation. It's supposed to. I'll get to it ASAP.)

Update: a quick note on the commenting policy here. Feel free to express disagreements with posts if you like. Cordiality is always appreciated, but I understand flying off the handle: I do it myself once every eight or nine years or so. But trolling with vile hate speech - such as in the two wacko Holocaust denial-type comments I just deleted - will not be tolerated. I'll be loose about the definition of "wacko," but it's my call. Play nice.

Updated again: Seems like a lot of people are having trouble tracking-back. The Trackback URL for this post is http://www.faultline.org/cgi-bin/mt-tb.cgi/1463 : try copying that and pasting it into your blog posting client in the "ping this URL" field or form or what-have you.

It will be rather late before I can compile your entries into a big handy directory - budget planning time at Earth Island, and I'm in meetings - so feel free to cruise some of the wonderful entries people have noted in comments here. Or check out what Technorati has to say on the subject.

Thanks for this initiative. I'm looking forward visiting the blogs listed here over the course of the day.

I don't have a blog (yet), so I'd like to take the opportunity here to say two things: I want to thank my mother for having the foresight and the guts to have me and my brothers crosstown bussed in Milwaukee (1976) to the McDowell Montessori school, one of the first public Montessoris in the U.S. I'd like to thank the McDowell Montessori for showing me at an early age what multiculturalism really means. They had a lot to work against. My neighborhood was composed of people of Slavic, Polish, and German descent, who not only made derogatory comments about each other, but especially against black people. If it hadn't been for the intervention of the Montessori school, I have no idea what kind of person I would have grown up to be.

I wish I could eliminate those racial categories constructed for me when I was so very young. I have to spend every day working against them.

I wasn't even thinking about BaRday when I posted a comment about Birmingham City Lines #2857 and December 1st, 1955 on TSFR, but it may be appropriate.

Didn't know it was Blog against Racism day -- but as it happens I used a routine post to call out a columnist on his racism.

Pfft. When I wrote "Birmingham", it was actually a _very_ creative way to write "Montgomery". At least that's my story and I'm sticking to it.

I didn't find out until now & can't post anything but a link back here until tomorrow. I am fully in support of blogging against racism and hope it can at least be a yearly event on Dec 1st (it should be an everyday event). Thank you.

After posting my comment earlier today, I was "flamed" for the first time in the 3 months I've had my small, family friendly, blog. Two words: racist c***.

It was probably coincidence; I'm political and liberal, everyone who knows me knows that, and I was bound to receive hate mail eventually. The word racist was not what I expected to hear however. I'm putting it out here only as an alert in the event that any of you are subjected to it as well.

If you're interested in my response to "anonymous", I can be found by clicking on the link.

The book "Why are All the Black Kids Sitting Together in the Cafeteria?" is great for understanding racism and the development of racial identity. I highly recommend this book to all people who want to counteract/eliminate racism.
