Hometown Parade

I uploaded a huge batch of photos, completely unedited, by way of testing Flickr's huge-batch uploader. Works like a charm, though like too many other niftificators it works only on Joe's laptop with OSX.

So here are piles of shots from the annual How Berkeley Can You Be? Parade. Yeah it's silly and self-indulgent. We don't care.

To see the parade in order (such as it is), start with the ice-cream man here and work backwards through the Flickr pages. Click on the image for a better view of, say, the Pink Man (I Heart the Pink Man) dancing with some guy in a suit of dried magnolia leaves, or the flamingo jockey kid (my favorite costume there) or the fine print on the art cars.

Thanks. That car's one of my faves, for years now. I first saw it outside the Northside Theater when we saw Harrod Blank's movie about art cars. Come to think of it, that's who was missing: Harrod and his OhMyGod car. There were a few others absent that we usually see, and the Naked People have been getting fewer and fewer. All guys this year, and kinda scattered.

I think the parade needs more horses, myself. The three we had were nice -- notice that one guy was riding a draft horse? The one in the full-face shot -- but I'd like to see more.

You want a cultural breakthrough, though, note the two shots I got of the Berkeley High cheerleaders -- the ones in skirts; the other group just before them was SF Cheer, an AIDS fundraising group. I got only one of them, but there were at least two fat girls in the high school squad. Dang, maybe there is hope, even if they _are_ cheerleaders.

I think my favorite was the big red wagon--that one made me laugh. And I noticed that at least one had made an appearance at BurningMan (I kept looking in your pix for my friend, who has periodically been in charge of okaying the art cars at BM and/or playing with fire (in the form of fire cannons of various sorts)).

The parade had rather a lot of Burners in it, in fact, including the cupcakes (which I love -- they're funnier in motion, zipping around in tight circles; don't miss the one topped with S&Ms and the out-of-focus Prozac -topped job in the shot with one of the motorized sofas) and the fire cannon art car, and our friend in the purple sash and his buddies.

Totally in love with the cupcakes. What made them move?

Still going through all these. Very very fun. Thank you for sharing them!

Sara, I think they're tiny little electric motorbike things. Either that or the driver-inhabitants are all in remarkably good physical condition, cuz I never saw anyone break a sweat. Anyway, silent.
