This cute little headline showed up in my Google Alerts for Harrisburg, PA today:

House prepares for forum on anti-crime legislation

Right. "From now on, crime will be illegal! We're officially agin' it!! But first, we'll organize a discussion group!"

The Ad Hoc Pro-Happiness Study Committee will be meeting in late November.

This is making me think of that very amusing "graphic novel" via which Chris Clarke recently redacted a book by Michael Bérubé.

"Acting quickly, he formed a committee to investigate the issue."

damn, who'da thunk that our crime problem is due to crimes not being illegal enough? unfortunately, this is about the sum total of legislative thinking on crime for the past 25 years or more.

anyone remember a decade ago, when congress passed the "anti-terrorism and effective death penalty act?" it made terrorism really really illegal after mcveigh bombed oklahoma city. as anyone can see, terrorism is no longer a concern.

I've always been amused that suicide is illegal. I'm surprised it's not a capital crime.

And yeah, I was thinking of both Chris' rendition of What's Liberal and of the single best line in all of Charles Schultz's work: "Suddenly, I organized a discussion group!"

PS', I'm glad to see that someone in Harrisburg at least theoretically still approves of happiness. Or of studying it, I guess.
