Gloom, Despair, and Misery
Bruno, the main computer in our little publishing empire, has died The Death and taken whoknowshowmany irreplaceable and lately unbacked-up files along with him.
This is going to be an expensive pain in the ass, but it has occurred to me that it's something money can buy and that, if we ravage our savings, we have the money for.
It's a household appliance, not a major bodily organ or system. No one, AFAIK, is dying because of it. Nothing like real evil and loss to give one a sense of proportion.
So we're going on a press junket to Alcatraz tomorrow to, um, make money.
Meanwhile, anyone whose email address I ought to have might kindly consider re-sending it to me, as the Eudora files with emails and addresses are presumed among the lost.Posted at May 8, 2007 05:18 AM
ron -- your perspective and priorities are in good working order. but damn...
if tomorrow is as hot as yesterday, alcatraz might be a good location -- ideal spot for catching a breeze, natural cooling via evaporation. all these years, and i've never been there.

Bummer! But, as you say, things could be (and have been) worse.
When my computer died a few years ago, I felt re-born, starting all over from scratch, I didn't need that stuff, anyway. But I'm more dependent on my computers (home computer and laptop) now, couldn't be so sang-froid about it. And you with your writing and photos and contacts. . .geez.

Owooooo! My sympathies. I consider my computer my auxiliary brain and am horribly threatened any time it so much as coughs.
Good luck with the money making. And good luck recovering your lost data.

I'm going home and backing up right away. I back up photos to a paid google account, music and doc files to a plug-in 2nd hard drive and to CD. But it's been awhile. If I enter my email to post a comment you have it right?

Well, that just fucking sucks, donnit? Hawayah, dearie? Does my eaddie show up when you look? Damn, I really need a new brain, to go with the potential knee. Don't know if they're still available but CC used to carry a 320 GB backup drive that just sucks your data up lahk a hoovah. Under $100, for all that, after rebates and such. Anywho, cruise on by and kick me in the head if you can't find my eaddie. Ta, mroo
