Above a door on Alcatraz:
Enlarge and look more closely if you don't see it: The stripes on the shield have been altered just a bit into the word "FREE."
This was done during the Native American occupation of Alcatraz in 1969.
It's one of those double-reverse one-and-a-half-gainer sidewise cuts-both-ways little facts of history that the National Park Service hasn't painted it out, and that it gets pointed out to tourists.
